With hills as a backdrop to its gently sloping roofline, the rustic San Diego Wild Animal Park's Center for the Reproduction of Endangered Species looks like a scene out of Africa.
Conversely, biotech giant Genentech's sprawling Oceanside manufacturing center of green-tinted glass, steel and more glass is downright modern. At night, lighted from within, the boldly painted walls and the angle of beam and ductwork are highlighted like artwork.
Both are the work of Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects, the San Diego firm that during the past 30 years has also designed much of the lab space used by the region's biotechnology industry.
The firm's three partners are proud that you cannot look at those buildings – plus the structurally diverse Carlsbad Library, Poway City Hall and Murrieta City Hall .....
